Delphiniums are very tall, substantially sized flowers spikes on long stems.  Each floret is about the size of a nickel or a quarter.  Their texture is somewhat ruffled and, depending on how they are used in arrangements, can look like wildflowers.

Colors: Delphinium is available in whites, blues, purple and pinks

Delphinium as wedding flowers:

Delphinium is probably most used in weddings in larger, striking arrangements, like alter pieces or buffet tables.  Few flowers can make a statement like delphinium can.

Dwarf varieties are also used in brides and bridesmaids bouquets, adding texture and airiness.  The individual florets can also be removed and wire wrapped for inexpensive corsage and boutonniere accent flowers.  In weddings where bright electric blue is a color theme, it can be difficult to find natural flowers that match – in those weddings delphinium will be a necessary feature.

What to arrange with delphinium:

Delphinium looks its best when put in large, airy arrangements.  Try using long curly willow branches and having the delphiniums shoot up between them, and then putting hydrangeas and roses at the level below, hiding the delphinium stems but not the flowers.

Delphinium Season and Sources:

Delphinium is available from late winter through early summer in the USA.
